2024

Happy New Year! Is it too late to say that? Sorry, Larry.

We actually post this on the lesser known ‘Quitter’s Day’ - the statistically most common day for people to stop showing up at their new gym memberships.

As the calendar turns, resolutions take center stage. But, as quitter’s day so poignantly observes, they are often ever so ineffective. We at Impostor want to discuss our own hopes, desires, and perspectives for the year ahead, and hopefully dispense of any doomer absolutism in the process. Psychologically speaking, new periods can be an incredibly effective way to shift our mindsets – whether this be the start of a new year, a new week, or a new day. So if you can utilize this momentum to meet your goals, embrace it, but don’t let a fatalistic attitude become you once you miss a day at the gym, okay?

Are New Year’s resolutions doomed to fail?

The initial weeks of a new year witness a surge in gym memberships, the adoption of healthy habits, and the widespread commitment to various self-improvement goals. Social media platforms amplify the excitement, with individuals sharing their resolutions and progress updates, creating an atmosphere of collective motivation.

Despite the initial fervor, statistics reveal a stark reality – a significant number of people abandon their resolutions within the first few months. The reasons behind this downfall are multi-faceted, encompassing unrealistic expectations, external pressures, and the psychological toll of constant goal-setting.

Delving into the psychology behind quitting resolutions involves recognizing the fear of failure, societal expectations, and the importance of practicing self-compassion. Shifting the focus from resolution-setting to habit formation proves to be a more sustainable approach. Embracing a mindset of continuous self-improvement goes beyond the constraints of a new year. Setting goals that extend throughout the year, celebrating achievements, and recognizing milestones contribute to a fulfilling and ongoing personal development journey. Encouraging a more realistic, sustainable, and self-compassionate approach to personal development can transform the way individuals perceive and pursue their goals.

The Impostor team’s own goals:

Conscious consumption

We’ve spoken about overconsumption in fashion, but really this point refers to everything. We’re embracing mindfulness in 2024 with regards to how we consume products, media, and more obvious consumables.

In 2024, the term "conscious consumption" has become more than just a buzzword; it signifies a mindful approach to purchasing decisions that considers the environmental, social, and ethical impact of products and services. Conscious consumption is not just about the environment; it's also about personal satisfaction. Knowing that the products you choose to purchase have a history that you can be proud to be a part of.

We’re also reflecting on consumption as it pertains to media. The way we engage with content has a profound impact on our well-being, influencing our thoughts, emotions, and relationships. Mindful media consumption is not about avoiding media altogether but adopting a conscious and intentional approach to the content we consume.

Unrestricted media consumption can lead to information overload, negatively impacting our cognitive abilities. In 2024 we’re taking control of our media intake by selecting content that aligns with our values and goals.

 Empowering women through fashion

We work directly with so many female artisans throughout our supply      chain and are committed to highlighting their talents. We are also in business to empower the multitudes of powerful women seeking to look their best in their business endeavors, and are grateful for any part we can play in that.

The journey towards empowering women in fashion traces its roots back to historical milestones, where women began to challenge societal norms and redefine their roles in society. From Coco Chanel's revolutionary designs to the feminist movements of the 20th century, women have played pivotal roles in shaping the industry.

Empowering women involves creating economic opportunities. At Impostor we are forging collaborations with women-owned businesses, promoting entrepreneurship and fostering a supportive ecosystem.

Fostering inclusivity and body positivity

So many goddamn new year’s resolutions are centered around reducing the sizes of our bodies. We’re all for exercise, hell it’s proven to be more effective than most SSRI’s when it comes to bettering our mood. But when exercise becomes a soulless metrics-driven endeavor? That’s when we give it up. The best exercise is the one you will do. Not for any desire to alter a particular part of your body, or change your body overall, but because moving your body overall feels good.  We want to continue to challenge the conventional approaches to the fashion industry’s idealization of unhealthy and unrealistic body types.

Central to Impostor’s mission is to make accessible high quality women’s workwear to the multitudes of women out there. Our commitment to inclusivity extends to our design process. We prioritize creating design options that cater to a spectrum of body types, ensuring that everyone feels their best. We recognize that women with different body types may prefer a different rise or silhouette to their trousers, and so we ensure such options are available. We are also always keen to hear any options you may be looking for! Our inbox is always open to you info@impostor.ca

Influencing a broader industry shift towards sustainability

Embracing eco-friendly fabrics is a cornerstone of our brand ethos. From organic cotton to wools, we explore and adopt materials that not only look good but also minimize the ecological footprint. Ensuring fair wages and safe working conditions for all involved in our supply chain is non-negotiable. Our collaborations with ethical manufacturers further solidify our commitment to human rights.

While promoting sustainability, we acknowledge the challenges. From sourcing to consumer behavior, we discuss obstacles and outline strategies to overcome them. Looking ahead, we have ambitious goals to further reduce our ecological footprint and expand our sustainability efforts in the years to come.

We're so excited for the year ahead with you.
